A Beginner's Guide to Enjoying High Tea
There's something wonderfully special about sitting down to a beautifully presented High Tea. The delicate pastries, freshly baked scones, elegant sandwiches and endless pots of tea create an experience that's designed to be savoured rather than rushed.
If you've ever wondered whether there's a "right" way to enjoy High Tea, don't worry. While there are a few traditional customs, the most important rule is simply to relax and enjoy yourself. Here's our guide to making the most of your next High Tea experience.
Start with the Tea
Before reaching for the food, choose your tea. Whether you love a classic English Breakfast, a fragrant Earl Grey or something a little more adventurous, take a moment to enjoy the aroma before pouring your first cup.
Tea should be poured first, followed by milk if you take it. Stir gently without clinking the spoon against the cup, and place the spoon back onto the saucer—not left inside the cup.
Begin with the Savoury
Traditionally, High Tea is enjoyed in stages.
Start with the finger sandwiches and savoury items. These are designed to awaken your palate before moving on to the richer, sweeter treats. Eat each sandwich in two or three bites rather than trying to finish it all at once.
Take your time between courses and enjoy the conversation around the table.
Save the Scones for the Middle
Freshly baked scones are often considered the highlight of any High Tea.
Rather than cutting them with a knife, gently break the scone in half using your hands. Spread a little jam and cream onto one half at a time as you eat it, rather than preparing the whole scone at once.
The age-old debate continues over whether cream or jam should go on first—but at The Cupcake Co., we believe there's no wrong answer. Choose whichever makes you happiest!
Finish with the Sweet Treats
Now comes everyone's favourite part.
Cupcakes, macarons, cakes, slices and other petite desserts are designed to be enjoyed slowly. There's no need to rush. Take small bites so you can appreciate the different flavours, textures and beautiful presentation.
Many guests like to pair a fresh pot of tea with the sweet course for the perfect finishing touch.
A Few Simple High Tea Etiquette Tips
Hold your teacup by the handle—there's no need to raise your little finger.
Place your napkin on your lap once you're seated.
Enjoy the experience at a leisurely pace.
Put your phone away (at least after you've taken a few beautiful photos!).
Most importantly, enjoy the company of the people you're sharing the experience with.
Remember—High Tea Is About More Than the Food
While the beautiful food certainly steals the spotlight, High Tea is really about slowing down.
It's about celebrating birthdays, catching up with friends, honouring a bride-to-be, welcoming a new baby, or simply making time for meaningful conversation over delicious food and endless cups of tea.
Life moves quickly, but High Tea reminds us that some of the best moments happen when we slow down and savour them.
At The Cupcake Co., we believe every High Tea should feel like a celebration. Whether you're joining us for a birthday, bridal shower, baby shower or simply a relaxing afternoon with friends, we can't wait to welcome you and help create memories that are every bit as sweet as the treats on your stand.
